Who's your daddy?

Take two with the Copic markers, this time with something more nerdy.
I managed not to get a big splotch of mistake on it this time and added a dab of Prismacolor for some darker darks and a smidge of Photoshop to blur to the background to finish it out.

Learning Curve

I got a set of Copic markers for Christmas and wanted to give them a try. I used a photo of a Kalamazoo woman from the 1880's I found at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum to give it a whirl. I sketched it out, I laid out some base tones, then totally messed up her eyes when I misjudged how much ink and how much of a wet on wet effect there would be.
Whoops.
I'll do better next time.

Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day!

I gave my three year old niece an easel for Christmas and drew Santa for her to help break it in.

Frosty Lives!

A pen and ink drawing as an example of radial symmetry for class. It's like a weird, veiny snowflake! Maybe that's what Frosty is made of and why he can live and breath...

Santa Claus is Watching You

Another Holiday themed whiteboard doodle.

I wanted to give the kids the impression that Santa was watching them, even if my back was turned to them, kind of like those cardboard cutouts of police cars.

M is for Monster

A collaboration with my three year old niece. She painted the blue green part, I doodled the monster parts. Adorable.

Witch is witch

My addition to the board in my classroom for Halloween. It's the Wicked Witch of the West.

Frenetic Phrenology

I doodled this on a Post-It on my desk. Now it's just sitting there, staring at me like a creep.

Happy Chris Columbus Day!

Happy Columbus Day!
I don't know why Chris Columbus gets his own national holiday, but I suppose "Goonies" is one of the best movies of all time.

Handy Helper

I have a new room for art class this year which meant that I had to redraw this example.

Angry Kitty

A new T-shirt design for school. Our mascot is a panther, or as it appears here, an angry kitty. I made it in Illustrator CS6.

Friday the 13th Part 3

A student asked me why I hadn't drawn Jason on the board today, so I quickly whipped one off.

May the Fourth of July Be With You

A Star Wars drawing I made, which thanks to the freedom of expression we enjoy here in America I was able to make. Although it may violate the copyright laws we enjoy here in America...
Happy Independence Day!

The Golden Apple

A watercolor painting I made as an example for art class.
Yes, another apple.
What can I say? They make for a good assignment and the kids like to eat them when their done.
It does get a little repetitive though I guess.

Also, did you know that the Greek word for orange translates to golden apple? I don't know what's worse, unimaginatively naming the fruit after it's color or calling it a type of apple, which as the idiom makes clear, could not be more different from it.

Rexasaurus

Instructions for art class drawn on the white board. I have students take a generic coloring book page and add value using cross hatching, hatching, and stippling rather than crayons.

Heart of Glass

Another version of that lady picture, this time etched onto glass using contact paper, an Xacto knife, and sandblasting at West Michigan Glass.

Dog show

A collaborative project I did with my students for Kalamazoo Education for the Arts to be displayed at the annual United Kennel Club Dog Show.
I made the original picture and then the students were each given a piece of it to recreate with colored paper, scissors and glue.
They didn't know how their piece would fit together until the end. I finished up the last remaining parts and our mutt made up from everybody's parts was ready for the dog show.

Happy Birthday, you beautiful rhinoceros!

Cool As Ice

I know it's kind of sad, but I'm proud of myself for drawing this with zero reference.

Bleeaahhh!

I drew this as an example for an observational drawing project (this wasn't the observational part).

Drawing Fan Art is less dorky than writing Fan Fiction, right?
(I like Star Wars)

Hey Blinkin

Happy President's Day and  Be Excellent to Each Other!

Bubble Party

The background from my Oscars thingy. Sort of.
I modified it for the final thing because it was too busy like this.

Family Label

Playing around with vector design and my family name. I'm not sure how well it reads though.
Maybe I'll use it if we ever start a family business making brass knuckles.
Or maybe diet soda pop.

Okay/Not Okay

A bit of signage made with vector art for school.
Feel free to use it if you need someone to take off their headphones and listen too.

Happy MLK Day!

We have school on Martin Luther King Junior Day and I like to use the occasion to remind students to try to live the dream Dr. King espoused.
I put this on the board and a kid asked me "you mean n*****?"
Yes, I meant that N-word. The challenge lasted all of two minutes.
