Another week of Inktober

Here’s another week of Inktober drawings. My theme is witches.

Many Sides

A portrait example from class. It's a former student who didn't use the picture I took of him for his self portrait project several years ago so this year I finally decided to use it. He kind of looks like a skinhead, but as far as I remember him he basically hated everyone equally. 

Helper Skeleton

An example painting for class on color. Based off an old publicity still of Sharon Tate. I wanted to go for a look that was somewhere on the border between psychedelic sixties and deep few days old bruising.
(The blog post title was supposed to be "Helter Skelter" but autocorrect had other ideas)

Pucker Up

Attendance was really low today (it's hard for school to compete with a sunny Friday) so with fewer things I had to take care of I decided to Photoshop up my pencil drawing from the other day with some mid tone and highlights type monochromatic values. Since that's what we're working on in my EFA class I'll use it as an example.

Pucker

My class is small and was quietly working independently, so I decided to draw. I think I'll probably play around with this in Photoshop and use it as an example for another class, but for now I kind of like it as just a pencil drawing.

 

The Dye is Cast

This painting is supposed to be an example for class for a creative way to do a color wheel.  

Looking at it now though I realize it looks like I made a poster for lesbian pride.

For over a thousand years, Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of a triumph - a tumultuous parade.
In the procession came trumpeters and musicians and strange animals from the conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments.
The conqueror rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children, robed in white, stood with him in the chariot, or rode the trace horses.

Count Day was this week, so I thought I'd draw a student who was too cool for school (in that they no longer attend school).

(I used an old picture I took for a self portrait project she never finished to make a regular portrait rather than a self one)

Menlo

I attended the 2014 Inspire Conference this week and they gave us notepads, in which I doodled one of the speakers, Richard Sheridan, head of Menlo Innovations. I also doodled a fish monster, a fat kid and some other weird stuff in it, but I thought I'd lead off with this.

Click Bait

So, if you read this blog from time to time, you know I'm a bit nerdy and a few days ago I posted this.

I thought that 15 year old painting would get some nice attention if I posted it to the Star Wars Google+ Community.
What did I get?
Nothing.
One solitary +1 from a community of  over 115,000 users. One lousy click.
And it's not like other posts weren't getting attention. Other posts, lousy ones, were easily getting dozens of clicks.

So I decided I needed to game the system. I needed to come up with something those geeks would click. So why not Darth Maul? Dorks love Darth Maul. Even the ones who hate Phantom Menace still love Darth Maul.
It was sure to get clicks.

It topped out at 83 +1's.

Meanwhile a half naked lady in an Ewok t-shirt got over 250.
I think maybe I should just stop trying to impress dorks.

May the Fourth of July Be With You

A nerdy painting I made... oh geez, fifteen years ago I think? Maybe fourteen years ago? I was digging through some old stuff recently and found it.

Pixel Chix

I have this mosaic/pixel assignment I do with class where we draw something on graph paper then translate it into something 8-bit looking with the grid and some markers. It's fun.

I took this picture and did it, then for some extra fun I scanned it into Photoshop and played with some layers to give it the pukey green tint of a Gameboy screen.

Ironic, right, using paper and pencil to get a mechanical look, only to scan it into a computer program that could have translated the original image that way with a few mouse clicks? 

Blanched

For a lesson on symmetry, we took mug shots, cut them in half then mirrored the image. I thought it would be a nice way to point out that most faces have a degree of asymmetry and most people look better with a touch of it. I made two examples. Here they are mostly rejoined to resemble the original mug shot.
