Mighty Aphrodite

Some of my former Zero Hour Art Class classmates and I are doing a calendar project for fun. I've got February and this is the start of a goddess of love sort of thing for Valentine's Day. I'll post more of this piece as it progresses.

Rapt Attention

I doodled up a dinosaur to do a quick Photoshop coloring demo for my EFA class.

Still life?

Our fourth annual district art show was Monday, which with getting ready along with my regular classes and EFA meant a 14 hour day. 

One of the more fun aspects of it was that the middle school art teacher set up her still life for people to try out, so after a few hours of set up I sat down to try it out. 

Not the best thing I've ever drawn by a long shot, but it was a fun way to wind down and when I left it behind it managed to impress a few middle schoolers. 

Pucker Up

Attendance was really low today (it's hard for school to compete with a sunny Friday) so with fewer things I had to take care of I decided to Photoshop up my pencil drawing from the other day with some mid tone and highlights type monochromatic values. Since that's what we're working on in my EFA class I'll use it as an example.

Pucker

My class is small and was quietly working independently, so I decided to draw. I think I'll probably play around with this in Photoshop and use it as an example for another class, but for now I kind of like it as just a pencil drawing.

 

Model Sheet

For my EFA class we did an assignment where they came up with a character, created a model sheet for the character, then swapped and drew each other's characters. It was pretty fun.
This was the example I made just in case we wound up with an odd number for pairing off. It's a revised version of a character from the comic strip I had in my college's newspaper as an undergrad.

We're using grids to scale images in art class, and what better extension of that than map making? So we're going to make treasure maps. This is my example.

Exquisite Corpse

I'm doing a summer arts program for high school students called ArtWorks at the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art through Kendall College of Art and Design and it's pretty great. We had a little bit of extra time today after our guest speaker session and so we played the parlor game "Exquisite Corpse."
If you're not familiar with the game, the premise is that each player draws a section of the body unaware of what the other participants are creating. At the end you unfold the drawing to see the completed form.
I drew the top section and the bottom two thirds were a couple of the students.

Click Bait

So, if you read this blog from time to time, you know I'm a bit nerdy and a few days ago I posted this.

I thought that 15 year old painting would get some nice attention if I posted it to the Star Wars Google+ Community.
What did I get?
Nothing.
One solitary +1 from a community of  over 115,000 users. One lousy click.
And it's not like other posts weren't getting attention. Other posts, lousy ones, were easily getting dozens of clicks.

So I decided I needed to game the system. I needed to come up with something those geeks would click. So why not Darth Maul? Dorks love Darth Maul. Even the ones who hate Phantom Menace still love Darth Maul.
It was sure to get clicks.

It topped out at 83 +1's.

Meanwhile a half naked lady in an Ewok t-shirt got over 250.
I think maybe I should just stop trying to impress dorks.

Backhand

A redo for an assignment example. The idea is that students get to do the Thanksgiving turkey style hand tracing, but then have to add every detail inside from careful observation.

Of course it helps to have older hands with some details to draw.
