I work multiple jobs. Some days it's my job to draw stuff, but most days it's not. But I still draw something pretty much every day because drawing's fun even when work is not. For your consideration, a collection of stuff I doodled on the job.

Lady Six
Looking back at some of these doodles, I think maybe I rely too much on visual non sequiturs as a crutch to suggest creativity and depth where there's really just a lack of coherence.

We will consume you...!
This one's a good lesson for portraiture- one little off thing can make somebody look less like themselves and more like a freak. It's the whole uncanny valley effect. In this kid's case it was the top of his head that was too tall and it was all downhill from there. He gets an egghead and next thing you know that leads to alien antennae, personal pronoun confusion and threats out of his previously innocent looking little soccer kid mouth.

Waterskuller
I was filling in for a class doing watercolor and learning wet on wet technique and while they were on lunch break I doodled this neat-o skull.

Freak A Deek
I started by trying to draw that weird lizard guy from the live action Masters of the Universe movie starring Dolph Lundgren. Why? Well you might as well as why the sky is blue. Yes, the reason I wanted to draw the lizard guy from Masters of the Universe is that he is the only part of the spectrum visible through our atmosphere. I couldn't exactly remember what he looked like though so it didn't really work out, but I got this freak out of it.

Red Devil Racism
It's true. I got a red pen and immediately thought "devil." How ironic that I would draw a devil as the embodiment of evil, when the true evil was my own discriminatory prejudice against devils.

Tinkerbell
Hey, check it out-figure drawing with no reference! I doodled this and then decided to pop it in Photoshop and color it up just a tad.
On a content note, what's up with Tinkerbell? She's supposed to be cute, but she's kind of creepy. The whole so small she can only hold one emotion at a time so she gets vindictive and all that. I imagine that she might have been kind of a nymph character, luring Peter Pan away to Neverland seducing him with magic and stuff, keeping him in arrested development and then getting jealous when a real girl captures his attentions. If Peter Pan were a Greek Tragedy, Good Ol' Tink would have killed all the Lost Boys Medea style.

Preggers or Keggers?
My sister is pregnant right now, so this cartoon is dedicated to her. I don't know any knock down drag out raging drunks or I'd devote it them too.

Archetypes
I was filling in for a class that was learning visual narrative and coming up with character archetypes, so I made some of my own. Kind of nerdy and Dungeons and Dragony, but fun to draw.

Y2K Bug
Remember the Y2K Bug from yesterday from the Space Girl 2000 thingy? Well, I put it in Space Girl's costume. Why? Why not? He likes it!

Space Girl 2000
There is now an entire generation for whom the year 2000 was never a far off future place where we would wear space suits and eat food pills. For them the year 2000 is like the stone age full of cavemen who didn't know how to text or use facebook. From spacemen to cavemen in the span of a decade. Sad.

Dr. Zuess
I was reading Antigone the other day and I think that thankfully the art of narrative has advanced quite a bit in the past 3,000 years. Sneeches on Beaches has a great deal more going for it than the whole argue, argue, then everyone suddenly kills each other and dies because the gods say so thing. Those gods were real jerks.

Fanny
I was watching a BBC show the other day and there was an ad for something you could do "from the comfort of your sitting room." Just when you think there's one other place in the world that isn't totally wacko they say something like sitting room instead of living room. I mean, sure, you sit in the room, but it's where the T.V. is, so living just seems to suit it better.

ABRACADABRA!
This probably looks a lot like Skeletor, but it's not, because he would never say "Abracadabra" like some cheesy second rate magician at a Bar Mitzvah. This is, incidentally though, the cheesy second rate magician who performed at Skeletor's Bar Mitzvah.

Pigskin
Pigskin is the adorable little pig who loved football so much he wanted to die and become one. If only he knew that pig's bladders have been replaced by synthetic rubber composites and cow leather. Sadly he died for nothing.

Mystery Chick
Who is this chick? I dunno, I just sorta drew her. I kinda wish I did know her though. She's sorta pretty, even if she did wind up with Little Orphan Annie eyes.

PUNCH!
Punch is named Punch not because he likes to punch other puppets, but because they have it coming. Especially Judy. You know what you did Judy.

Clyde
If you think about it, being trapped in a maze with ghosts that want to eat you is pretty creepy. The fact that Pac Man takes a pill and can eat them back is pretty psycho too.

Blue Candlebox
This is the second of four drawings in a series I did with students of monochromatic symbolsim relating to levels of truth and perception. This is the blue one and being the color to symbolize perception of truth it is based on a photograph. It depicts something we cannot actually see long enough to accurately capture with the naked eye - the flickering lighting of a candle- and so we must rely on the how the camera sees the world, which of course is fundamentally different from our own perception.

Red Candlebox
This is part one in a four part series I did with students. The idea was to create four drawings using different techniques with specific monochromatic color schemes each representing a different level of understanding of truth with red being imagination, blue being perception, white being truth, and green being enlightenment. This is the red one meaning imagination where we drew from memory and invention.

Miss Pretty
Another day, another odd little creature. This gal's name is Miss Pretty.

Frogman
This guy was an excuse to try out some new pens that I was going to have students use. I figured if I expected them to use them I had better try them out. I can't say I'm entirely happy with the pens and the students had an even harder time with them. Oh well. Those puddles he's standing in are water by the way, in case you were wondering.

Demonic Slack Jawed Lout
This guy just started out as a just a slack jawed lout, but as the drawing continued he was hunchbacked, shirtless, wearing some sumo underwear thingy, and by then it just seemd to make sense for him to grow a tail and horns to make him into a demonic slack jawed lout. Plus is it just me, or does he look a tad like Billy Bob Thornton?

Lil' T Piddies April Fools
This lil' piddy went to market, this lil' piddy stayed home, and the rest of the piddy goes to fools, sucka! Lil' T piddies fools, and none more so than April Fools.
