Safe

We took a field trip downtown the other day for the Education for the Arts Peace Forum where our students along with students from other area schools met and participated in an assortment of arts workshops. I made this in a workshop on using the language and techniques of street art to cover the topic of community.
It's maybe a little pretentious, but hey, I whipped it off in 20 minutes with markers glue and index cards, so I don't think it turned out too badly.

Blue Shadows on the Trail

Another Art Class example, this one of using silhouettes, positive and negative space, and layers of space, all with cut colored paper. 

The inspiration for this project was seeing the Multiplane Camera Walt Disney developed for "The Old Mill" and then later used in features like "Snow White" on display at Disney World a couple of years ago. The idea was that animation lacked depth because the camera could on pan and tilt but not move through the scene along the z axis. The Multiplane Camera broke the background down into multiple layers of space which were then physically separated into racks whose proximity to the camera could be adjusted to give a moving camera effect because though each element was flat they now had genuine physical space on a z axis that could be adjusted.

In the project we create a z axis by separating the layers with pieces of foam board and hot glue (which I haven't done here actually- I just left it as layers of colored paper).

I've done this project for two years now but this is the first time I tried making one myself.

Nockmaar

We did a fun mask project in class using cut paper and this was my example. 

I was thinking of General Kael from "Willow", so named because of how scary kale is. Yes, that's a pretty dorky reference, but the kids thought it was just a cool looking skull. 

I finished it off with some spray paint, which kids also think is cool.

Pup It

 I did a puppetry thingy with students where construction paper + lunch sacks= magic. This was my example. It's a dog or something.

About Face

An example for Art Class on bilateral symmetry using a folded piece of colored paper and scissors. It's a face.

A horribly androgynous face.

Monkeyvision 3D

A stencil I made for an example for a class project, and then I never got around to actually using the stencil. One day maybe.

It's a chimp with 3D glasses.

Rip Torn

A collaboration with my niece when we were playing with some Crayola watercolors and construction paper.

Cut and Paste

Arts and crafts with my three year old niece.
I'd draw something, she'd cut it out and paste it. Though most of the time she'd cut the drawings into pieces and then "fix" them with a glue stick. This is the one she didn't cut to bits. It's a turtle.

Lashina

A simple little cut paper design project on repetition, pattern, and rhythm for art class. 

Dog show

A collaborative project I did with my students for Kalamazoo Education for the Arts to be displayed at the annual United Kennel Club Dog Show.

I made the original picture and then the students were each given a piece of it to recreate with colored paper, scissors and glue. 

They didn't know how their piece would fit together until the end. I finished up the last remaining parts and our mutt made up from everybody's parts was ready for the dog show.
